Woodbine Brotherhood Synagogue
Woodbine, Cape May County

Woodbine
is a sprawling town with wide streets in Cape May county. It once
hosted
the most successful of the Jewish agricultural colonies established
in southern Jersey in the late nineteenth century. The synagogue was
built in 1893 by the Woodbine Brotherhood congregation. The bricks
were
made locally by the town's settlers, which was common practice, especially
in the previous century. This is a substantial brick building, externally
very much in the manner of several of the late nineteenth century Baptist
and Methodist churches of south Jersey.
UPDATE:
The synagogue was purchased by Michael Azeez, who has had it renovated
and restored to its original physical configuration. The building
is now a museum, with is artifacts
and information from former Woodbine families. The name of the museum
is the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage; it will open to
the public in June 2003.
