Although the
website was created to make available contemporary photographs,
there are too many interesting churches that have disappeared—except
on old albumen prints or in engravings made for pre-1900 books
and magazines. We solicit such images from our readers and will
reproduce at least one every month, along with such historical
information as we can find about these vanished churches.
If you would like to see an image
in your possession on this site, we are pleased to receive your
own scans, or you may send us the photograph and we will create
a high resolution scan and return the image to you with a copy
of the scan and out thanks! If you have a number of such vintage
images, we may be able to bring our scanner to your site.
Green Bank meetinghouse
Green Bank, Cumberland County

This photo was likely taken about 50 years ago, but could as easily
have been shot about the turn of the century, so little has the church
been altered since it was built.
A will written in 1851 bequeathed the meetinghouse to be used by the
Methodist Episcopal church, "and for no other purpose." It
was rebuilt in 1861 or 1871 (the record is unclear). Local tradition
has an earlier
meeting
house on this site by 1748.
