Broadway Methodist Church
Salem, Salem County

Organized in 1850 and built in 1858, the Broadway church is one of two large Methodist churches in town. This one, although much younger, is a little more prominently located on the main street, almost across from the courthouse.
A fine building, beautifully maintained. The pediment is unusually "heavy," with substantial brackets and supported by pilasters with accentuated capitols. I have termed this style "bankfront church" (for want of a better word) because to the unaccustomed eye, it appears more like a bank than a religious building. I believe there is an important Methodist church in Philadelphia to which we can probably trace this style, which is found in several towns in south Jersey as well as in Belvidere (Warren) and Easton, Pennsylvania.
