Calvary Baptist
Church
Parkerton, Little Egg Harbor Township, Ocean County

Parkerton
originated as a farm in 1721 and hasn't grown much—it
is simply a short string of commercial and residential buildings,
mostly along Route 9. It had a Methodist church in the 1800s, but
there is no trace of that now—unless that building was taken
over by the present congregation. There is no mention in the HABS
account of a Baptist church, but this building has been here since
1893.
The building has a cruciform plan, a
bit unusual for a small county church, and a nice arrangement of
angles and gables. Aluminium siding covers all details and texttures, but
this late Gothic church is rather nice.
