St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church
Orange, Essex County

 

Jeremiah O'Rourke was the architect for this substantial French Gothic-style church, built in 1866-69. The building is 180 feet long and 68 feet wide. The same quarry provided stone for St. John's and St. Mark's Episcopal church in West Orange, within sight of each other.The tower and spire were completed in 1879. I was informed that three of the 11 bells were bought at the Paris Exposition in 1878, that the church is known for its 1879 Hook & Hastings pipe organ, and for the oak reredos, carved in 1892.
      St John's was organized in 1851, and is the mother church for seven other parishes in the area.
