Milford Presbterian church
Milford, Hunterdon County

This substantial stone sturcture, seating 600, is the second Presbyterian
church on the site. The first was built in 1833 and served until it
was removed to make way for the current building. The building was stuccoed
until a renovation in 1999.
A sawmill and grist mill were among the earliest buildings, showing
up on a survey done in 1757. The grist mill burned and by 1805 the location
was identified as Burnt Mills. Shortly thereafter it acquired
the name Milford. By the 1880s it had two hotels, a drug store, hardware
store. a tin-and-stove store, three churches, two gristmills, a carriage
shop, two cabinet-makers shops, two blacksmiths, a post office
and a railroad depot.
The style and scale are similar to the
Methodist churches in Fairmont, Oldwick and Whitehouse and the Reformed
churches in Annandale and Pottersville.
