Linden
Avenue
Methodist Episcopal
Church
Jersey City, Hudson County

The
sign on both sides of this interesting church at the corner of Ocean
and Linden says it is the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, but when it
was built in 1888-89 it was the Linden Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church.
It is the oldest congregation in the Greenville section of the city,
formed in 1844. It is a brick building, painted a light color today,
but it originally was a dark (red?) brick with many polychrome touches.
The central
tower at one time carried
a
tall belfry
and
spire,
and
there was an abundance of pinnacles elsewhere.
