     About this site
We've created a database and photographic inventory on more than three-fourths of the 18th & 19th century churches in the state and add to it more or less each month. We welcome and solicit all corrections, contributions and suggestions from our visitors.

Canton Methodist Episcopal Church

Canton, Lower Alloway Township, Salem County

founded 1885, built 1886

The Methodist church now in Canton was originally organized in Harmersville, about 2½ miles away, in 1833. It moved to Hancock's Bridge in 1849, and when a new congregation was organized in the lower part of the township, the Canton Methodists came into existence.
In form it is a small domestic-size building, similar to a half-dozen other Methodist and Baptist churches in South Jersey. The large extension to the rear was added later. I suspect the belfry was originally open.
